OverviewThe flow switch was designed by Frank Smith during the Second World War to protect large Mirrlees diesel engines from a loss of cooling water, and the manufacturing was subcontracted to F. Bamford & Co Ltd. In 1947 Frank Smith joined F. Bamford & Co Ltd, bringing with him the design rights of the flow switch, which he developed to suit a wider range of industries.
Other instruments were added to the portfolio with temperature, pressure and level devices designed and manufactured to the same rugged specification. A flameproof range was also designed to be used down coal mines and in petro-chemical installations, and the instrumentation division was a success. Therefore, in 1973 Frank Smith established F Bamford Instruments Ltd in its own right to continue production of this equipment. Products
